Period Overview

The Let It Be Period came after the White Album Period. It contains songs that appeared on one single ('Get Back'/'Don't Let Me Down') and the Beatles 11th UK LP, Let It Be.

There is considerable intermingling of songs during this Period, some winding up on Let It Be, others on the Beatles last LP, Abbey Road. For various reasons, Let It Be was released after Abbey Road, even though the songs on Let It Be were recorded mostly before Abbey Road's songs.

Most of the songs on the album Let It Be were recorded in the month of January when the Beatles were rehearsing for a live performance at a yet-to-be determined venue. By the end of January they'd given up on the idea of a proper concert, settling instead to play on the roof of their own Apple Studios in downtown London on 69Jan30. Songs which could not be performed on the roof (like because a grand piano was required) were recorded in the studio the next day.

Sound engineer Glyn Johns created a preliminary LP called Get Back, but the Beatles decided not to release it. In early 1970, after the Abbey Road LP had been released (69Sep26), producer Phil Spector was called in to try to make a soundtrack LP from the raw tapes of the rehearsals and performance. This was to be a companion LP to go along with the release of the film, Let It Be.

Details on all the sessions and releases are in the book Songs of The Beatles' Let It Be Period.

Book Overview

(for a detailed look at the overall book format, see the Series Overview)

The book starts with an overview of the Beatle Periods, showing where Let It Be fits in their career. It then shows chronological lists of songs recorded and released during this Period.

The "Releases" section shows records that were released containing songs recorded this Period. Details are provided about the UK records. (Details about the US records are in The Songs section.)

A "Hearing The Music" section gives some orientation and history about the vinyl records and how they were intended to be heard.

The bulk of the book details the 13 songs of the Let It Be Period:
