About the Recording

This is a true “relic” recording of the early ’90s: No studio or studio effects, no producer or engineer. Just one guy in a room with one microphone trying to get his ideas on tape.

The recording was made in 1992 using a four-track tape recorder. Ken played all the instruments (electric guitar, bass, real drums), sang all the vocals, positioned the microphone, adjusted levels, and turned the tape recorder on and off.

The original reel-to-reel tape was mixed to cassette. The cassette was copied directly to a desktop computer. Fidelity is limited and there’s “a bit” of tape hiss. But the concept and spirit of the song were captured.

About the Video

The Karaoke-type “video” was put together in mid-December, 2018. It was sparked when I realized an old copy of Adobe Premiere Elements (PE11) that had been on my computer for years was capable of making music videos. I thought it would be easy to just put up the lyrics, but as all creators know, learning the tool can be a long and frustrating process. Fortunately, once I learned the basics, it became fun (if tedious) to put up the lyrics in the right place on the right beat. PE11 had a few animations I was able to toss in.

Adding actual video will be an ongoing process of learning and acquisition.

intro (four-bar instrumental with guitar riff)
verse 1 Night on the town, had a few rounds
When this lady ups and asked me to dance.
Well, I eyed her down, and she cracked a frown
When I said “Honey, you haven’t a chance…
sub-chorus 1  (ooo......................oo)
I saw you walk away from the fella you came with,

        (oo.........................oo)
Now he’s drinkin’ all alone at the bar.

       (oo.................oo)
You’ve got a reputation as a real heartbreaker,

And I wouldn’t trust you this far…
chorus 1              (cruel thing)       (fool thing ya do)
’Cause it’s a cruel thing, such a fool thing ya do.

      (crude thing)       (rude thing)
It’s a crude thing, such a rude thing,

   (ah...................ah! )
And I wouldn’t be caught DEAD

with the likes of you.

No, no, no!
verse 2                (such a nice smile)
Well, she lit a smile,

                    (whoo!)
Flashed me her wiles,

(Come on baby come over here)
Tryin’ to entice me her way.

                   (Yer lookin’ good baby)
I said, “I like your style,

(But you ain’t gonna get me)
But I won’t be beguiled.

                            (I ain’t goin’ nowhere babe-baaay...)
I like it here and here I'll stay.
sub-chorus 2 (ay........................... ay)
You're about as faithful as a bee to a flower,

(Ooo.......................... bzzz, bzzz, bzzz, bzzz–zz–zz)
Sting me then you’re buzzin’ away.

(Bruuu................. zuh!)
You’re just a user, an emotion abuser,

(Uh...................... uh!)
You won’t set me up to betray!”
chorus 2
sub-chorus 3 “aw, placate!” (guitar solo) “oh, yeah.”
chorus 3
outro The likes of you-oo-oo! (guitar riff to complete ending)

Performance Notes

The demo was recorded as by a typical four-piece band (lead, rhythm, and bass guitars, drums) with a lead vocal and two backing vocals. Performers should feel free to enhance.

The lead and backing vocals take a “call and response” type role in the second verse and sub-chorus.

Why This Page?

This song still cracks me up (makes me smile). If I can spread the mirth, the effort will not have been completely wasted.
