Disk Mode Overview

Disk Mode has four or five pages, depending on which ROM version you have.

Pages 0, 1, 2, and 3 require a disk formatted on the 01 using the Format Disk command on Page 2.

Page 4 was added with ROM #62. All operations on Page 4 require an MS-DOS formatted disk. This can be formatted using the Format Disk command on Page 4, or on your DOS-compatible PC (format it specifying "720 KB" type formatting).

DISK P0: LOAD-1

2 Load Combi/Prog
3 Load All Sequence
4

6 (options and commands)
A B C D E F G H
This page loads all Combis and Progs, all Sequences, or both, from disk to memory. Existing data in memory will be lost as it is overwritten by the new data.

DO NOT try to remove the disk while the display shows "Now Loading".

1 Load 1 Combi
2 Load 1 Prog
3 Load 1 Song
4 Load 1 Pattern

This page lets you load an individual Combi, Prog, Song sequence, or sequence pattern from a floppy.

DO NOT try to remove the disk while the display shows "Now Loading".

Save All Data
Save Combi/Prog
Save All Sequence

In all cases, the only option you have is whether to save to File A or File B. A "File" in this case means "All Data", so you can save two different sets of Data (Combi/Prog and Sequences) on one floppy. The easy way to think of this is to remember the 01 uses a 2-sided floppy - side A holds a complete set of data while side B can hold a completely different set.

Format Disk (01-only format)
Once formatted, this disk can only be used in an 01 or 01-compatible equipment (used for storing sequences, Progs, Combis, and other 01-type stuff). You cannot use this disk in your computer unless you use the DiskImage program. An 01 with ROM #62 can format a disk in either of two ways: 01-unique or MS-DOS. You should always use 01-unique unless you are working with Standard MIDI Files.

How to Format a Disk Using Page 2 (for 01 Use Only)

Try to use double-sided, double-density disks, not high-density. Although high-density disks will work, there is some question about how well they retain data that was written by a double-density drive. (For more info, click: using high-density disks).

Don't forget to un-protect your floppy - slide the tab so the hole is closed. The rules are:
Write-protect: The hole is open (as in, you can't write on a hole)
Write-enabled: The hole is closed (as if you could write on the tab that closed the hole)

  1. Power up your 01.
  2. Press DISK to enter Disk Mode.
  3. Press "2" to go to Page 2.
  4. Press CURSOR DOWN 3 times (or CURSOR UP once) to highlight line 4.
  5. Insert a disk in the disk drive.
  6. Press "G" or "H" to initiate formatting.
  7. You will be asked to confirm that you want to format the disk.
    1. To abort formatting, press "G" or "H".
    2. To continue formatting, press "E" or "F". The 01 will then display "Now Formatting", and the drive will start making clicking sounds. Formatting proceeds, and will take about 2 minutes (1:56 on my 01).
The 01 displays "Completed" when it is done.
DO NOT try to remove the disk while the display shows "Now Saving".

DISK P3: DATA FILE
1 Load MIDI Data (from floppy)
2 Save MIDI Data (to floppy)
3
4
5
6 (options and commands)
A B C D E F G H
This page has nothing to do with 01 as a synth making sounds. This page lets you use the disk drive in the 01 to store MIDI data from other (external) MIDI devices. You later send this data back over MIDI to these external devices. Typically this means receiving then sending System Exclusive data, but you can use it any way you want.

The terminology on this Page may seem a little confusing. You must first receive and SAVE the data to floppy (the second option on the menu). Later, you LOAD the data from floppy (the first option) and it is automatically sent to the 01 MIDI OUT connector.

As with all 01 floppy operations, do NOT try to remove the disk while the display shows "Now Saving".

Load MIDI Data (from floppy)
Loads data off the 01 floppy and sends it out the MIDI OUT port. Make sure external MIDI devices that are meant to receive this data are powered-on and ready to receive MIDI data.

DO NOT try to remove the disk while the display shows "Now Loading".

Save MIDI Data (to floppy)
This option lets you save MIDI data sent by some other MIDI device connected to the 01 MIDI IN connector. Once you highlight this option you will see "Awaiting MIDI data" in the 01 display. At that time you go to the MIDI device whose data you want to save and tell it to start sending data.

The 01 display will show the number of bytes received. Multiple devices can send data (you might check to make sure they are indicating their MIDI channel in the transmission). There is a 64KByte limit to the total number of bytes received (about 21 seconds worth of uninterrupted data). If you exceed the 64KB limit, an error message will appear and the data will be lost.

When the sending MIDI device is done sending data, press 01 button G or H to save that data onto the floppy in the 01. You will be asked to confirm the save. Confirm by pressing YES (button E). If you don't want to save the data, press NO (button G).

The manual says: "To save a MIDI Data File, the sequence data memory must be at least 35% free."

DO NOT try to remove the disk while the display shows "Now Saving".

Load Std MIDI File
DO NOT try to remove the disk while the display shows "Now Loading".

Set Date for Save
default: Jan 01  1992

MS-DOS format saves a date along with a file name. Here is where you set the date that will be kept with any SMFs you save. This date will be lost when you turn off the power.

Save Std MIDI File
DO NOT try to remove the disk while the display shows "Now Saving".

Options:

Format 0 or Format 1?
You must select one of these SMF file formats for saving your file.:
Format 0: All channels are merged into a single channel.
Format 1: All 16 channels are kept separated.

I believe Format 0 is an old SMF standard that has no current use. Unless you must be compatible with old MIDI gear, always use Format 1.

Notes:
The file extension ".MID" is automatically added to the end of the Song (file) name.

Patterns are "opened" before being saved to disk. This makes the Song larger than the one with Patterns when it is loaded back into the sequencer. If you were at the limits of Sequencer memory using Patterns, saving the Song to disk and loading it back may push you over the memory limit.

Format Disk (SMF)
Once formatted, this disk can only be used in the 01 for Page 4 operations (SMF read or write). You can use this disk in your PC/MS-DOS computer, where it will be treated as a 720K floppy IF it was originally a 720K floppy and not a 1.4M floppy. (click here for details). An updated 01 (with ROM #62) can format a disk in either of two different ways: 01-unique or MS-DOS. You should always use 01-Unique unless you are working with Standard MIDI Files.

How to Format a Disk Using Page 4 (for SMF Use)

Try to use double-sided, double-density disks, not high-density. Although high-density disks will work, there is some question about how well they retain data that was written by a double-density drive. (For more info, click: using high-density disks).

Note: If you bought 720K disks new, they may already be formatted for IBM PCs (MS-DOS). In that case, you don't need to format them again. 1.4M disks must be re-formatted to look like 720K disks.

  3. Press "4" to go to Page 4.
  4. Press CURSOR DOWN 3 times (or CURSOR UP once) to highlight line 4.
  5. Insert a disk in the disk drive.
  6. Press "G" or "H" to start formatting.
  7. You will be asked to confirm that you want to format the disk.
    1. To abort formatting, press "G" or "H".
    2. To continue formatting, press "E" or "F". The 01 will then display "Now Formatting", and the drive will start making clicking sounds. Formatting proceeds and will take 2 minutes.
The 01 displays "Completed" when it is done.
