New Anti-Spam Utility From Indra's Net

On August 5, 2003, the following message announcing the Indra's Net Spam Controller was sent to all Indra's Net customers:

Here at Indra's Net, we know that the onslaught of spam (unsolicited bulk email) is undermining everyone's enjoyment and productivity on the Internet. So, for the past several months, we have been developing the Indra's Net Spam Controller to curtail the influx of unwanted email to our customers. Based on the most promising emerging technology, the Spam Controller works by identifying electronic mail messages that have been sent to multiple recipients ("bulk" mail), rather than trying to filter messages based on content. We have been testing this new tool internally with great success, and are ready to give you access to its features and capabilities before it goes live on August 20th.

The two-week preliminary period will run from August 5th through August 19th, during which time you can access all of the Spam Controller's configuration tools and instructions, as well as your Rejected Mail Log. Although the Spam Controller will not actually block any email until August 20th, you will be able to see which of your incoming messages would have been blocked had the Spam Controller been live. This will give you the opportunity to identify any legitimate email you would prefer the Spam Controller not block, and "whitelist" it so that it will continue to be delivered to you in the future. In particular, anyone who is subscribed to electronic mailing lists will need to check to make sure that incoming messages from the list(s) are not being flagged by the Spam Controller; if they are, the situation is easily remedied by "whitelisting" it as described above.

Even when the Spam Controller does block messages, they will still remain stored in your Rejected Mail Log for one week, where you can view, whitelist, or forward the message to your inbox.

If you are not on any mailing lists that you wish to continue receiving messages from, you don't need to do anything! When the Spam Controller goes live on August 20th, you will automatically notice a dramatic decrease in the amount of spam you receive. (You can always go back and access the Spam Controller configuration, help, and logs at any time in the future.)

If you are on any mailing lists or are otherwise concerned about what messages the Spam Controller may block, are curious about the details on how the Spam Controller works, or wish to disable it altogether, please visit the Spam Controller help and configuration at https://indra.com/spamcontroller, accessed with your Indra's Net username and password.

Finally, because Indra's Net will be filtering email on a system-wide basis (although anyone may choose to opt out of it), we needed to make a change to our Terms and Conditions of Use. Please review it at http://www.indra.com/terms.html, paying special attention to new section 8A.

As always, please contact us with questions, concerns, or comments. We look forward to a bright future with far less spam for all of us!

Sincerely,

The Staff of Indra's Net
